Obesity is a phenomenon that isn't just affecting the West, but all corners of the globe. Scales, BMI charts and tables let us know when we humans have put on a few too many, but who knows the appropriate weight for pets? Scale or no scale, it was clear that this poor 8-year-old Beagle named Kale Chips had a weight problem.
Kale's obesity was so severe that it was life threatening: He had serious pain, could barely move, and weighed nearly 80 lbs. when he was found. Kale's owner was suffering from dementia and probably didn't notice he was ballooning up. Sick and chubby, Kale arrived at an animal shelter in Chicago, Illinois. The employees were shocked by his condition and ended up publishing his story, hoping a caring family would take him in.
Kale's story reached animal lovers around the world and it didn't take long before they found a new home for this big boy. Not only were they loving, the new owner was an expert in animal nutrition. As the owner of a dog bakery, Kale's new family knew exactly what he needed.
Kale's new diet was balanced with daily walks and swims. The combination of movement and healthy nutrition quickly transformed Kale into a svelte dog once again - he lost nearly half of his weight!
Now back at a healthy 40 lbs., Kale can move normally once again. He catches quite a few eyes and scrubs behind the ear when he's out walking his human. His new family is so proud of his transformation. There appears to be no risk of the "yo-yo" effect here, judging by all the love and healthy support he's getting.
Kale's transformation is an inspiration for man and dog and shows that with a little effort and good friends, you can overcome any challenge.
