On January 15, 2015, Erica Morales wrote on her Facebook page that she was scheduled to have a Caesarean section at 5 pm to bring her four children into the world. But what happened after the procedure was unbelievable.
Everything began harmlessly: Erica Morales and her husband Carlos married in October, 2007. It was love at first sight for the two even though she couldn't speak Spanish and he didn't know how to speak English.
But language didn't seem to come between them and both learned each other's languages to deepen their love. The two then decided to have children to complete their fairy tale marriage.
After a year of trying and one miscarriage, the couple underwent IVF treatment as they wanted so desperately to have a family. Upon visiting the doctor for an ultrasound, they discovered the unbelievable: it was not just one kid, but four!
Erica and Carlos were ecstatic. Finally, they were going to become parents. Something that they had wished for so long. The countdown had begun and the two started to think about names for the babies.
They decided on Carlos Jr. for the boy, and Paisley and Trace for two of the girls. For the fourth child, a girl, they couldn't think of a name, which is why they decided to wait until after she was born.
But after seven months, Erica's contractions began far too soon. Erica texted her husband telling him she was admitted to hospital — Carlos dropped everything at work and rushed to be there for the birth.
At the hospital, it became clear that that four children would have to be delivered via Caesarean section. For the soon-to-be father, it was pure excitement knowing he would get to hold his children in his arms after waiting for them for so long.
The Caesarean was performed and shortly after, the doctors allowed Carlos to join his exhausted wife. He held her hand and squeezed it firmly, yet compassionately, as she woke up from the anesthesia. But then suddenly, everything took an unexpected turn for the worst.
The monitors began to beep like crazy and the nurses and doctors rushed into the room! Carlos was sent outside to wait with his quadruplets. This is when the shocking news came ...
Erica had died from extreme blood loss. Carlos heard what the doctors said, but was speechless. His entire world was destroyed. "How can this happen? She was doing so well and suddenly she's dead. She was alive and now she's simply gone."
Carlos was desperate, distraught and disillusioned. What should have been the most beautiful moment in his life developed into the worst. But he decided for his wife's sake as well as his children's not to give up.
They would grow up bilingual, go to college, and find jobs, he wrote to his wife in his last letter to her.
