Most women dream of being a mother. But what if you have a rare genetic condition that puts both the baby and you at risk? Trisha Taylor, 31, had osteogenesis imperfecta from birth. She saw the light of this world with 150 fractured bones.
This rare disorder, caused by a mutation in the gene that controls collagen formation, leads to fragile bone formation. Therefore, the patients might get their bones fractured even due to mild trauma.
But Trisha, being an audacious little girl right from the beginning, was determined not to let anything come in the way of realizing her dreams. Thanks to her parents, she was never raised as a disabled child. ‘Even though I was in a wheelchair from early childhood, none of my friends consider me disabled,’ says Trisha.
At first, she was on Oxygen 24×7, as she was too weak to breathe on her own. But thanks to some new treatments, her courageousness, and, most importantly, the unconditional support she had from her loving family, she was able to breathe on her own by 15.
She met her life’s love at the College of South Idaho, where she studied social work. His name is Michael Taylor, and he is 6′ 1″ tall. ‘Unlike other men I had been dating before, Michael made no assumptions about me, and was positive about having a good life, and children.’ Trisha recalls. After one year of dating, the sweethearts got married but were advised against having children.
Trisha’s most phenomenal adventure began next. She decided against all the odds that she would have a baby, and talked with her doctor about it. ‘He was shocked to hear that, and he started giving me many warnings,’ recalls Trisha. ‘But my decision was concrete, and nothing was definite, you know. So I made my decision final and stopped contraception’.
However, her dream did not easily come true. She and Michael had to endure the bitter experience of getting miscarried twice. But in the third time, they were lucky enough to have their perfect son, Marven, by cesarean section. ‘I was relieved when the scans came normal, I felt a lot of calmness in the third pregnancy’ Trisha says. Marven did not have OI, so he leads a perfect playful life with his ambitious mother and father.
