Grandma keeps calling wrong number leading to sweet friendship with ‘stranger’

Even though Callie told the elderly woman that she had the wrong number - she kept calling back. It's a good thing she did too.

Most people just hang up when they realize that they’ve called the wrong number.

But have you ever considered who it was that you were talking to on the other line?

For one woman, simpling hanging up wasn’t an option when she found out that she had called the wrong person.

Grandma Margaret left a voicemail on what she thought was her grandson Barry’s phone.

She told him to bring his pants over to her house so that she could hem them.

However, it wasn’t Barry who she had called, it was a girl named Callie.

When Callie heard the voicemail, she quickly realized that the woman had called the wrong number.

Of course, she could have just left it at that and hoped that the woman figured out how to get a hold of her grandson.

Instead, Callie decided to call Grandma Margaret back and let her know about the mix-up.

When Grandma Margaret realized what had happened, she didn’t just hang up on Callie, she asked how she was doing.

The two of them chatted for a bit before finally hanging up.

However, this story doesn’t end here.

Grandma Margaret called Callie a few more times thinking that it was Barry.

Callie’s phone number was one number off of Barry’s.

Callie thinks,

“she must have written it down wrong, and had my number.”

On these calls, after Callie would tell Grandma Margaret that she had the wrong number again, Margaret would ask about Callie’s life and check in with her.

It just so happened that around this time, Callie had learned that her parents were getting a divorce.

This was a tough time for Callie and the phone calls with Grandma Margaret helped her through it.

Over time, Grandma Margaret’s accidental calls to Callie became intentional calls.

She would call just to check in on her and see how she was doing.

“Hi Callie. This is Grandma Margaret, just calling to say I love you and you have a good day. And when you get a chance, give me a call, okay? Love you, later.”

It became common for Grandma Margaret to end her calls with, “Love you, later.”

When Callie’s days were busy and hard and she didn’t have time to call Grandma Margaret back right away, just listening to the voicemails helped her get by.

Of course, Callie would always call Grandma Margaret back eventually and the two of them ended up talking on the phone once a week, every week, for a year.

After all that time talking on the phone, the two of them decided to meet in person.

Callie drove over to Grandma Margaret’s house and the two of them met and hugged for the first time.

Grandma Margaret told Humankind,

“It was real nice the first time we met. It was real nice. She is just someone special to me. She knows how to show love and just look at her face. She’s got a smile on her face all the time. How ’bout that? She is special to me.”
