For 11 years, Richard and Linda Hoagland had the picture-perfect marriage. Richard, who was described as spontaneous, successful and fun, was able to support his family, buy them a big house in Indiana and take them on lots of vacations.
But on a bitter cold day in February 1993, everything changed. Richard called Linda at work and said he was sick and needed to go to the emergency room immediately.
Instead, Richard disappeared. His car was abandoned at Indianapolis International Airport, but there was no trace of him taking any flights or checking into any nearby hospitals. All of his belongings were left at home, from his toothbrush to his passport. Most importantly, Richard also left behind their two sons, 9-year-old Matthew and 6-year-old Douglas.
If that wasn’t bizarre enough, Linda discovered he maxed out their credit cards and forged her signature on a bank loan; she was left with a heap of financial debt.
Authorities were also suspicious of Linda. They thought she had something to do with her husband’s disappearance.
23 years passed by. Matthew and Douglas grew into adults and Linda eventually remarried. Richard was gone for good… or was he?
In 2016, Linda received a phone call saying Richard had been arrested on July 20 after allegedly stealing the identity of a man who drowned in 1991.
But that wasn’t all Linda was about to discover about his shocking new life.
